Active Release Technique
Active Release Technique is a soft tissue technique that breaks up scar tissue adhesions in the muscles, joints, ligaments, and tendons. The difference between ART and deep tissue massage is that ART gets the patient involved in the recovery. The practice of ART requires that the patient move their joint through an active range of motion while the practitioner applies pressure to the damaged area. The pressure applied helps to break up the scar tissue adhesions
There is an extensive knowledge of anatomy that is required to perform ART accurately. There are over 600 muscles in the human body and an ART practitioner needs to know how to differentiate one muscle form the next. This takes a lot of expertise. The practitioner needs to know the origin, insertions, action, and nerve innervation of each muscle they treat. Because of the high level of education and extensive training most ART practitioners are chiropractors, physical therapists, or massage therapists.
