About 80% of adults experience back pain at some point in their lifetime. Up to 25% of adults are chronic sufferers of back pain. Back pain is the #1 cause of work related disability and the second leading cause of missed work days. Common treatments for back pain are chiropractic, oral prescription or over the counter medications, injections, physical therapy, massage, acupuncture, and surgery. Treating back pain can be very frustrating. One reason why it can be frustrating is because not every type of treatment works for each patient. So, what type of professional help should someone seek if they do have back pain? Generally, it is best to start out with either a medical doctor or a chiropractor because they can do an examination and x-rays to find the cause of your pain.
So, what causes back pain? Some of the most common causes are: muscle strain, disc bulge, spinal misalignment, arthritis, sway back, and sciatica. It is difficult to self-diagnose the specific cause of your back pain. A good doctor will make the correct diagnosis and refer you to the proper clinician for treatment. One problem that can arise is when you visit a doctor that has a bias towards his type of treatment. I have seen too many medical doctors that will not refer to a chiropractor even when the cause of the back pain is clearly something best treated by a chiropractor. I have also seen chiropractors who will take on any patient whether they think they can help or not and overpromise results to the patient. Again, a good doctor will make the proper diagnosis and refer out to other professionals as needed.
